Wisconsin School of Recognition Awards Go to 116 Schools

This year’s 116 Wisconsin School of Recognition Award recipients include 80 elementary schools, 20 middle or junior high schools, and 16 high schools. Four schools were recognized in Janesville including TAGOS Leadership Academy.  Congratulations to students and staff!

Jamie Hallen hired as new Science Teacher/Advisor

Starting this fall, TAGOS Leadership Academy will welcome Jamie Hallen as a staff member. Jamie will serve as an advisor and Science teacher. Jamie went to high school in Middleton, Wisconsin and completed his teacher certification in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. Congratulations to Jamie!

TAGOS Hosting PBL Summer Institute

TAGOS Leadership Academy will be hosting the Wisconsin PBL Summer Institute in Appleton, Wisconsin on August 1-4 with 85 educators attending from across the state and country.  Keynote speakers for the institute include:  Peter Pappas (Educational Consultant), Steven Rippe (Independent Consultant), Barry Golden (Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction), and Sarah Granofsky Toce (Executive Director, Wisconsin Charter School Association).

TAGOS Leadership Academy will begin their second year of summer school for current high schoolers and other students who would like to test out project based learning.  Summer school will begin on Tuesday, June 14th and conclude on Friday, July 22nd.  During that time period students will be allowed to earn up to 1 credit.  Nic (lead summer school advisor) and Amanda (summer school aide) look forward to seeing all you students on June 14th.

TAGOS Leadership Academy will graduate their fourth class of students on June 3, 2011 at the Janesville School District's Educational Service Center on 527 S. Franklin Street.  Festivities will kick off at 6 pm and after the diplomas are distributed students, parents, and staff will celebrate with cake and punch.

Beloit College EDYS 102 Visits TAGOS

Students in EDYS 102 have recently been making site visits to a school in Janesville, Wisconsin called TAGOS.  Trips to TAGOS began after Dr. Sonja Darlington supervised a Ripon prospective teacher last year.  Following several supervisory visits by Darlington, Nic Manogue, a Co-Dean of Students invited her to also bring some of her classes.  As a result, several EDYS classes have made the trek to Janesville, and her students have been able to see for themselves what a project based curriculum can do for at-risk students.  In this setting, students are mentored individually and in advisory groups, in order to successfully complete their high school education.

Nekoosa School Board seeks Charter School Grant

The Nekoosa School District could open its second charter school in the fall, as local officials seek state funding to establish a project-based alternative learning center for grades 6 through 12 come September. School leaders in the nearby Wisconsin Rapids district also are considering converting Rudolph Elementary to a charter school.

When I talk with groups of teachers about project-based learning, audiences typically divide along predictable lines. There are the pioneers who have been teaching with the project approach for years and wouldn’t consider going back to more traditional instruction. There are those eager to give projects a try but not quite sure how to begin.

Wisconsin State Assembly Speaker Michael Sheridan Visits TAGOS Public Charter School

Michael J. Sheridan, Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly and Representative for the 44th Assembly District, visited TAGOS Leadership Academy in Janesville on Friday, March 27th. Also on the visit were Timothy Cullen, former State Senator from the Janesville area and a current School Board Member, and Dr. Karen Schulte, Janesville’s new School District Superintendent. Al Lindau, Dean of Students at TAGOS, led the tour.

Greenhouse project to help students finance 2011 trip to Rome

A greenhouse going up at Arrow Park is one step on a journey that will lead to Rome.  Students, parents and staff from the TAGOS Leadership Academy are building the greenhouse near the school, which is housed in one of the Arrow Park buildings formerly owned by Parker Pen off North Parker Drive.

Kids make anti-violence TV commercial

Students at a Janesville charter school have an idea about what causes school shootings and other violence among kids their age.  They've taken that knowledge and used it to produce a public service announcement being shown during Charter Communications cable TV programs.

Leadership academy gives at-risk students another chance to succeed
